Alchemist Tanukin

Art commissioned by ClumsyPawn.
The client asked for an Alchemist Tanukin in a lab set. The figure was to work separate from the background.
I haven't made a background this complex before so it was a real challenge, but fun nonetheless. almost every element on the piece took a bunch of reworking and research until I was satisfied with the result.

I focused a lot on value, composition and color, to try to make the piece as clear as posible even with such an excess of elements.

This was my initial idea, I wanted to give the character a fun, playful aura

Here I tried to expand on that idea, but realized the character's face was less visible, the figure too stiff, and it would be harder to not have the body covered.

Finally I decided to focus on the silhouette only. I modified the pose so the character wouldn't need to interact with the background, andt could be separated easily. Made the face clearer and the pose more dynamic.

The character was pretty straightforward from then on. The background on the other hand took a lot of trial and error till I came to this first layout. Finally I cropped down the canvas bc the character looked too small.
